The Scarlet Letter Project
2
Sin ● Sin is very common in today's life. It is actually part of every day life especially when you lie. Therefore its taken lightly most of the time. ● In the mid 1800's sin was probably just as common, maybe a little less, but had more severe punishments.
3
Adultery ● Adultery today is frowned upon as it was or is during anytime in history, but we are more familiar with it than during history as it progresses. Punishment less severe. ● Back in the 1850's adultery would ruin your public perception harshly but not to the severest extent of it would in the 1640's.
4
Revenge ● Mistaken as an act of justice. Always will be common to anyone at any time may it be the year 100 or 3,000. We admit revenge is wrong but most of the time do it anyway.
5
Justice ● Lawful Justice – righteousness of the law. Strictly followed at all times yet punishment different at different times. ● Moral/Ethical Justice – righteousness of what the right thing to do from your heart sort to speak. What you know is right vs. what you actually do.
6
Betrayal ● Uncommon today but probably done more now than the 1850's and before. Again, worse punishment in the earlier days than now.
7
Illegitimacy ● Common these days. Not really frowned upon but there is more of a sympathy factor. Most people believe it is a shame to not grow up with both parents but there is a few who don't, usually they ones who grow up without one parent. It wasn't as common back in the earlier days because adultery was hated and came with severe punishment and ruined your perception to others. The only other factor would be to lose a parent in a war or unplanned death
8
Guilt ● Guilt by definition against law is viewed bad and always had. There are once again different punishments according to the time. But guilt towards others, and too petty to be a crime or have gotten away with a crime, is over exaggerated sometimes and leads to futile deaths.
9
Crime ● Crime is looked down on, hated, and never liked. There is different punishments for the time period. ● But there is different degrees of crime, there always have been but there is more flexibility these days compared to earlier days.
10
Punishment ● There are different degrees of punishment for different degrees of crime these days especially if there is sufficient evidence or not. ● There were different degrees of punishment back then as well but usually more harsh and ruined reputation more. Usually didn't need a whole lot of evidence.
11
Evil ● Not as hated as it was earlier in time. There are a lot more Satanic worshipers now day than earlier in history by a long shot. They are disliked but not punished by death penalty. ● Evil deeds were hated back then as now but if you were convicted of compacting with the devil you they probably wouldn't kill you in the 1850's but would ruin reputation.
12
Forgiveness ● Forgiveness seems humble these days but also some people might think you are too gullible and exploit you. ● Back in early days forgiveness was a one time thing with most people. Yet it was common somewhat with the very religious.
