The Rainforest By Krystal 4KJ

Did you know? A wide variety of animals live in rainforests, including birds, snakes, insects, jaguars, cougars, chameleons, turtles, frogs, and many more. Temperate rainforests lie in the temperate zones (between the tropics and the polar circles) of the globe. They are found in a few regions scattered around the world such as western North America, south-eastern Australia and New Zealand. Tropical rainforests lie in the tropics (around 28 degrees north or south of the equator). They are found in many areas near the equator such as Asia, Africa, Central America and the Pacific Islands. The words 'jungle' and 'rainforest' are sometimes used to mean the same thing but there are some differences Rainforests used to cover 14% of the Earth’s surface but due to deforestation now only cover around 6%. Rainforests are forests that experience a high level of rainfall. There are two types of rainforest, temperate and tropical. The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world. A number of tribes in areas such as central Africa and Brazil still live in rainforests, having no contact with the outside world.

ABOUT JAGUAR’S Jaguar Facts The jaguar Panthera onca is the largest cat in the Americas and the third-largest in the world (after the lion and tiger). Its head-body length can reach around 240cm, and its shoulder height up to 75cm. The Pantanal in Brazil is one of the best places in the world to see jaguars. The best time to visit is the dry season, from late April to early November. Jaguars can be distinguished from other big cats by the shape of their spots. The spots resemble roses, and as such are known as rosettes. Jaguars have incredibly powerful jaws, strong enough to pierce a skull and crack a sea turtle’s shell. They are fearsome predators and will hunt anything from frogs, fish and reptiles to livestock, cows and deer. With fragmentation of habitat a major threat to the species, a ambitious project - the Jaguar Corridor Initiative, proposed by renowned zoologist and Panthera CEO Alan Rabinowitz - was launched in 2004 to create a continuous north-to-south habitat corridor throughout the species’ range, enabling it to roam and breed. Jaguars are solitary animals. Males defend a range of up to 80-90km 2 and only come together with females to mate. Breeding occurs throughout the year, and females have up to four cubs, which disperse after two years. Jaguars can survive in many different habitats. They are normally found near water, and prefer swampland or tropical rainforest. They also survive in forests, grassland and scrub. Jaguars are competent climbers, and will scale trees. They often use their vantage point among the branches to pounce on unsuspecting prey below.

Chameleon The chameleon has beautiful colours but changes to match it surroundings – its called camouflage and helps to protect it from its predators. It ‘s eyes can change direction separately so it can catch its prey.

Poison Dart Frogs Poison Dart frogs live in the rainforest habitats in Central and South America. They live in trees and under leaves and logs and rocks on the floor of the forest. Because they are small, from 1/2 to 2 inches long, they are hard to see. Poison frogs warn predators with bright colours and patterns. There are many species of poison frogs that can be found in every colour under the sun! Dart Frogs got their name because hunters like the amazon Indians, would tip their arrows in the frog’s poison to hunt. Sadly, because people are cutting down rainforests for farming and other things, Poison Dart Frogs are at risk. The Blue Poison Dart Frog is the most endangered due to the pet-shop market.

ABOUT THE ANACONDA Anacondas make their home in the Amazon jungles of South America and are part of the Boa Constrictor family. Anacondas live near rivers, lakes and swamps and like to live alone. Water is their main escape method when confronted with danger. Rather than attacking they will choose to slide into the water unnoticed, if possible. Anacondas eat amphibious animals, like frogs & toads, as well as fish, caiman, birds, ducks and turtles. The average size of one of these snake- giants is 6.1 m (20 feet) long and 148.5 kg. (300 pounds)! Anacondas give birth to live young, around 24-35 at a time. Anacondas are very difficult for scientists to study or even find. They are really quiet and leave no trail. They spend a lot of their time in the dark waters of their habitat.

Gorilla These can hurt you because they are strong and powerful They are very family orientated What do they eat? Gorillas are mostly herbivores and eat plants. The plants they eat include leaves, stems pith, fruit, and bamboo. Sometimes they will eat insects, especially ants. A full grown adult male will eat around 50 pounds of food in a day. How big to they get? Gorillas are the largest species of primates. The males are often twice as big as the females. The males grow to around 5 ½ feet tall and weigh around 400 pounds. The females grow to 4 ½ feet tall and weigh around 200 pounds. Gorillas have long arms, even longer than their legs! They use their long arms to "knuckle-walk". This is where they use the knuckles on their hands to walk on all fours. They are mostly covered with brown hair. Gorillas from different areas may have different coloured hair. For example, the western gorilla has the lightest hair and the mountain gorilla has the darkest. The western lowland gorilla can also have greyish hair and red coloured forehead. When male gorillas get older their hair turns white on their back. These older males are called Silverback gorillas.
