NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 4 Enablement 101 What is an enablement? Allowing someone other than PAYCOM to speak on S/G Who else would speak on S/G? POD Backup to PAYCOM PDs/ PIs Conferences R/T ops to increase science gains and crew efficiency Assist with troubleshooting Ensure PD has taken PAYCOM 254 once you’ve received their name via the Enablement Matrix.

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 6 Enablement Types Scheduled Operations with PD Enablement Specific tasks performed on-orbit may benefit from having a payload expert enabled on S/G to speak directly with the crew. Crew Requested R/T Enablements Crew requests PDs assistance on S/G for a certain activity Crew Conference Allows the Crew to speak with a PD before working with a payload for the first time
7
NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 7 Enablement Types Crew ConferencePayload Operations Differences A crew conference allows the payload expert to have the opportunity to talk to a crewmember in regards to their science and upcoming operations. Conferences are scheduled prior to the payload operations and are usually 15 minutes in duration. Being enabled during payload operations allows the payload expert to talk to a crewmember as needed during the actual execution of their science activity. Duration of enablement will vary. Similarities POD and FLIGHT must approve any “unscheduled” crew communications. Both types of enablements may be planned pre-increment or requested and approved in real-time.

All IFN’s should be submitted with POD, OC, GC, LIS Rep, CAPCOM, and FLIGHT as recipients. POD, OC, GC, and LIS for concurrence CAPCOM and FLIGHT for awareness The formatting and information found within an IFN will vary depending the enablement type.

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 15 Day of the Enablement IFN should be approved Coordinate S/G usage with CAPCOM** Provide IFN number to GC for backup numbers and required actions** Heads up for Marshall Comm. and required actions** Ensure PD’s have received phonetic alphabet, protocol words, voice protocol, and the enablement checklist. Enablement checklist will be reviewed with PD ahead of enablement Coordinate S/G voice checks with POD Enable PD (physically or by request) Introduce PD to the Crew Disable PD (physically or by request) **Breakdown of coordination with CC, GC, and MCOMM on following slide**
