2
The heart has the following characteristics: 4 chambers Size of a fist Located just beneath the sternum It’s function is to pump blood through 2 separate circulatory systems Pulmonary circulation Systemic circulation
3
The Cardiovascular System Circulation – pumping of blood through the entire body by the heart.
5
Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood on the walls of the blood vessels, created by the heart There are two specific pressures measured: Systolic (systole) Diastolic (diastole) Arteries carry blood away from the heart while Veins carry blood back to the heart
6
Transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues for use in cellular metabolism Removal of carbon dioxide Hemoglobin iron-protein molecule which carries oxygen Average volume: 5-6 quarts men 4-5 quarts women
7
This system supplies oxygen to the body, carries carbon dioxide away Pressure from the diaphragm and ribs allow air to flow from lung tubes to air sacs called alveoli Gas exchange occur at the alveoli and allow oxygen to return to the heart and systemic system The ability to pick up and deliver oxygen is critical for the functioning of the body
8
Lungs expand and recoil to move air by : Downward and upward movement of the diaphragm Elevation and depression of the ribs Normal breathing is accomplished mostly by the diaphragm During exercise: abs help
