Animals in the Ocean Over 50% of the animal species are located in the Ocean. The Blue Whale is the largest animal in the entire Ocean. The Blue Whale’s heart is the size of a Volkswagen.
3
Animals in the Coral Reef 6 of the 7 species of sea turtles are found in the Coral Reef. There are over 200 species of birds that call their home the Coral Reef. There are over 1,500 species of fish that live in the Coral Reef.
4
The Plants of the Ocean Giant Kelp can grow 2 feet in one day. Kelp is the most common plant found under water. All plants, that are located in the Ocean, are called algae Seaweed is the most familiar type of algae
5
Coral Reef Plant Life The are over 500 species of marine algae in the Coral Reef. Sea grasses are abundant with in the Coral Reef. Algae, sea grasses, and mangroves are the producers of the Coral Reef Biome.
6
Ocean Climate The Ocean has the largest affect on the Earth’s climate than any other biome. Under water earthquakes or seaquakes cause large wavers called tsunamis. The largest tsunami measure 210 feet above sea level, hitting the Kamchatka Peninsula in 1737.
7
Coral Reef Climate The average temperature of Coral Reefs are 18*C or 62*F. Because of its warm temperature the Coral Reef holds an abundance of sea life.
8
The Geography of the Ocean The Ocean covers 140 million square mills… That’s nearly 71% of the earth! The deepest park of the Ocean is 6.86 miles. The longest mountain chain is in the Ocean and it is 40,000 miles long.
9
Coral Reef Geography The Great Barrier Reef stretches 1243 miles and can be seen from the moon. 88% of the World’s Coral Reefs are found in Asia. 25% of the World’s Coral Reefs have disappeared and an estimated 2/3’s of the remaining ones are at risk.
10
Interesting Facts The Ocean contains over 20 million tons of Gold. The water pressure at the deepest point of the Ocean is over 2 tons per square inch. Coral Reefs border 109 Countries. 3.5 Billion people depend on the sea for food. 90% of international trade occurs by trade. 50% of international communication happens via under water cables
