Do Now (on a separate sheet) 1. What is glucose? 2. Where does glucose go after entering the bloodstream? 3. What is the purpose of insulin?

Diabetes refresher Diabetes is a disease that involves problems with the hormone insulin Normally the pancreas releases insulin to help your body use sugar from the food you eat Diabetes occurs : 1.When the pancreas does not produce any insulin 2.When the pancreas produces very little insulin 3.When the body does not respond appropriately to insulin, a condition called "insulin resistance"

Types Type 1: 1.Type 1 diabetes occurs because the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (called beta cells) are destroyed by the immune system. People with type 1 diabetes produce no insulin and must use insulin injections to control their blood sugar. 2.Type 1 diabetes most commonly starts in people under the age of 20, but may occur at any age.

Types Type 2 1.Unlike people with type 1 diabetes, people with type 2 diabetes produce insulin. However, the insulin their pancreas secretes is not effective, the body is resistant to the insulin. When the insulin is not used as it should be, glucose can't get into the body's cells.

Tests Fasting plasma glucose No eating/drinking for 8 hours prior Normal: less than 100 mg/dl Prediabetes: 100-125 mg/dl Diabetes: more than 126 mg/dl

Tests Glucose tolerance test 2 hour test, checks your blood glucose after drinking sweet drink At 2 hours: Normal=140 or less Prediabetes=140-199 Diabetes=200+

Tests Insulin Level Test Once you have diabetes diagnosis…. Differentiates between type 1 and 2 After drinking sugary drink, measure insulin levels No increase in insulin=type 1 Increase in insulin=type 2

GTT Introduction ●Must be complete in order to participate in the lab on Friday ●Read and annotate(highlight, underline) ●Work through the introduction ●Everything up to variables Due Today, fully completed (including self-grade) ●Turn in, then complete 2.1.2(on website) with a partner quietly
