2 Essential Question How can I identify the kind of non-fiction book I’m reading? And why should I care?

3 We learned Fiction Books contain stories that are NOT true. Non-Fiction Books contain information that IS true What is Non-Fiction?

4 Non-Fiction Books -provide factual information -have text features that help us understand the text: ~ Table of Contents, Index, Glossary ~ Headings, Subheadings ~ Pictures, Graphs, Charts

5 Non-Fiction Books - are not necessarily meant to be read from cover to cover - are organized by subject or topic

6 Non-Fiction Books contain information that IS true (with a few exceptions) OOPS!! We need to back up!

7 When the Dewey Decimal System was designed, all books were shelved by subject and each subject was given a number. Even Fiction books had a number….813! Because the fiction collection is so large, most libraries have a Fiction section. What exceptions?

8 Other Fiction books with Dewey Decimal #’s are: 394 & 398 Folktales, Fairy Tales and Riddles 811 Poetry 812 Plays

9 WHAT?! Fiction shelved in Non-Fiction?! 394, 398, 811, 812 and 813 are Fiction ABSORB! Discuss with your partner some types of books that are Fiction, but have a Non-Fiction #.

10 How are non-fiction books organized? Melvil Dewey took care of that problem. He was a librarian who devised the Dewey Decimal System. He assigned a number to every subject or topic.

11 Mr. Dewey divided the major subjects or topics by hundreds. Let’s take a look at each division. 000-100-200-300-400-500-600-700-800-900

12 BUT, FIRST!! WHY SHOULD WE CARE? The topics that interest you most in life may be found within the non-fiction section! You’ll want to know how to find these books you are interest in reading.

13 000’s (1-99) were assigned numbers… Books about General Topics or Generalities

14 In Generalities 000’s you’ll find books about: libraries, museums, computers, unexplained topics and reference books like: encyclopedias, almanacs and magazines!

15 Topics in the 000’s that may interest you? Bigfoot UFO’s Ghosts Loch Ness Monster Computer Programming

17 100 - 199 Books about Psychology were assigned numbers…

18 In Psychology 100’s you’ll find books about: -how to understand yourself and others -how to cope with all kinds of things like illnesses, handicaps, and family problems.
