Physical Literacy Creating an Active Wales High Level Targets: Adults – Shift the average point of activity from 2.4 to 3.4 by 2020. (Based on 5 x 30mins/wk) Children – Shift the average point of activity for 11 to 16 yr olds from 3.9 to 4.9 by 2020. (Based on 5x60mins/wk)

Creating an Active Wales THE VISION We envisage a Wales where: Activity is at the centre of the school ethos and physical literacy is as important as numeracy and language; (Creating an Active Wales, p4) Physical Literacy

Creating an Active Wales Theme: Active Children & Young People.....The provision of high quality physical education and the effective delivery of physical literacy is essential for them to have the skills and confidence for lifelong participation in sport and physical recreation. (Creating an Active Wales, p34) Physical Literacy

Creating an Active Wales What are we going to do?: Creating an Active Wales will; support the Assembly Government’s key priority of reducing child poverty in Wales by ensuring that all children and young people, including those most disadvantaged, are able to access physical activity opportunities and develop physical literacy, ensuring the best start in life; (Creating an Active Wales, p10.) Physical Literacy

Creating an Active Wales Developing the evidence base. “The current evidence base is patchy and mainly reviews work done in other countries very different from Wales. It is vital that the academic sector in Wales help us increase our understanding of the effectiveness of approaches, and that all partners engage in research work collaboratively.......Evidence & research outcomes will be disseminated to all partners through the physical activity network.” (Creating an Active Wales, p20) Physical Literacy

Seeking Enlightenment? Establish series of research seminars: To identify strengths, weaknesses and validity of instruments used to measure physical activity and its correlates including; intensity & duration of pa, fitness, recreational activity, sedentariness, spatial interaction, physical literacy and interventions. To agree priorities for both future research and future practice. To promote collaboration between researchers, policy-makers and practitioners. To inform and encourage potential research grant proposals including sustainable, effective and cost-effective lifestyle interventions. Physical Literacy
