5 Resilience  the human capacity to face, overcome, and be strengthened – or even transformed – by the adversities of life  the universal capacity that allows a person, group, or community to prevent, minimize, or overcome the damaging effects of adversity and the ability to “bounce back” and recover from adversity  the ability to cope with life's adversities

6 Children Are More Resilient When They:  have people they trust in their lives and can establish trusting relationships  have role models - people who set examples of positive behavior  understand their strengths and weaknesses  have structures and boundaries for their safety  can communicate their needs and feelings

10 Challenges families face when caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children  They already have children to take care of in addition to orphans that they take in.  Caregivers might be depressed by the state of the HIV epidemic, leading to depression.  There is stigma and fear associated with AIDS, which can have an isolating affect on families.  Caregivers may not be able to take care of their own needs in addition to a child’s needs.  Caregivers may lose social networks and the ability to cope with challenges.

16 The Peace Corps Volunteer  The Peace Corps Volunteer is a member of the community who plays a very important role in strengthening the linkages between the child, the family, and the community. The Volunteer’s role is to collaborate with community members, work within existing systems, and create new programs that can build on the resilience and strengths of children and youth.
