2 What is Accelerated Reading (AR)?

3 a computer-based program that allows students to take quizzes on a variety of books. AR is…

4 AR also keeps track of: 1.the books students are reading 2.the average level of books being read by each child 3.the average percent scored by each child

5 In a Nutshell… Students… rread a book Independently mmay have a book read aloud to them ccan read a book with others And Then Students can take a quiz on that book.

6 How does AR help with my child’s reading achievement?

7  AR gives a child a chance to practice reading books on his/her reading level.  AR also quizzes him/ her on comprehension.

8 How is my child’s reading level determined?

9  AIMsWeb Reading Test— given three times a year: fall, winter, and spring  Teacher’s Observation

10 What are AR points and how can my child earn them?

11  AR Points are awarded when a quiz has been completed successfully (80% or higher score).  AR points are tracked by the computer for each student. Points

12 Points  The number of points earned depends on the books being read.  The more difficult the book, the more points can be earned.  Points range from 0.5 to approx. 50.0

14 Where can I find AR Books?

15  Our Media Center  Local Public Libraries  Book Stores Note: Most Media Center books are AR/Lexile scored. For books without AR/Lexile information, check: Arbookfind.com and/ or Lexile.com

16 What are my child’s AR goals ?

17 For individual student goals: Check with your child’s teacher. For ALL students, the end of the year score goal = a n average of 80% on quizzes or higher.

18 Questions Can AR quizzes be taken at home? Quizzes are taken in class, the Media Center, or any classroom in the building. Is every book an AR book? No. Check Arbookfind.com to see if a particular book has an AR quiz.

19 AR CODE OF CONDUCT 1. Students may only take tests on books they have read, they have read with someone, or someone read to them. 2. Students may not take a test on a book which has been made into a movie unless they have read the book. 3. Students may not take tests for other students.

20 AR CODE OF CONDUCT (Continued) 4. Students may not discuss AR questions or answers with other students. 5. Students may not take more than 2 quizzes per school day.
