Geometric Progression
2
Objectives The presentation intends to: teach students how to solve problems related to geometric progressions; help students understand more about the given topic;
3
What are geometric progressions? It is a sequence in which each term is obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a constant A sequence t 1,t 2,.... t n,... is called a geometric sequence ( or more commonly a geometric progression) if there exists a number r such that t n /t n-1 = r for n>1
4
Also known as a geometric sequence, is a sequence of numbers where each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed non-zero number called the common ratio.
5
Symbols t n = last term n= number of terms r= common ratio a= first term S n = sum of terms
6
Formulas t n = ar n-1 a= t n /r n-1 S n = a(1-r n )/1-r r= t n /t n-1

Infinite Arithmetic and Geometric Progression
16
Definition The sum of an infinite geometric progression a, ar, ar 2, … with r < 1 is given by, S=a/1-r whereas, -1<r<1 S is also called the sum to infinity of the G.P. a, ar, ar 2 … In symbols, we write this as, S=lim S n and read “S is the limit of S n as n increases without bound”
17
The rational number 1/3 has repeating decimal.33333… which we can consider to be as infinite sum: 1/3 =.3+.03+.003+.0003+… This is an example of an infinite geometric series with ratio.1. Thus,.03 =.3x.1,.003 =.03x.1,.0003 =.0003x.1, and so on. We define an infinite geometric series in the following way.
18
Find the sum of the following terms. 1) 1+2+3+4+5… =infinite 2) 2+4+6+8… =infinite 3) 9+3+1/3… r=1/3 S= a 1-r S= 9 1-1/3 S= 9 2/3 S= 27/2 4) 50+25+25/2… r=1/2 S= a 1-r S= 50 1-1/2 S= 50 1/2 S= 100
