1 The Organization of Care Since the US follows a “fee-for-service” basis: The US: Excels in diagnosing & treating a disease but….. Lacks in keeping up with patients with chronic conditions. Ex: Diabetics US lacks in diabetic follow-up care. (US Ranks low at #7; UK, France, Germany, & Netherlands are all ranked higher) Same goes for other chronic conditions like heart disease, obesity, and overall health and well-being.

2 The Organization of Care Q. Why do other Western countries have lower costs and better health than the US? 3 Reasons: 1) US medical sys lacks digitization and IT resources (W. Europe is >50% ….. US is only <25%) 2) US lacks “team-based” approach & incentives (W. European docs get bonuses for improving clients’ health) 3) US has limited role of nurses (W. European nurses have more autonomy and do more) Your overall health is “chronic”; it’s a long-term approach!

3 Conclusion Q. So how do we lower costs of the US medical system? 4 Ways: 1) A dministrative simplification -reduce redundant admin costs 2) IT infrastructure & digitization -increase access for medical records 3) Payment reform -provide incentives to docs for chronic & overall health instead of just “fee-for-service” 4) Value-based cost-sharing -being more efficient with existing resources
