Georgia’s Language Assistance Rule To comply with the NCLB, GaDOE Title III Department in partnership with the OCR, revised the state’s language assistance rule which includes: 1.Screening for eligibility services 2.Providing instructional support 3.Assessing English Language Learners annually

What is the W-APT? The W-APT is the state-adopted screening instrument to determine if a student is eligible to receive language assistance services. LEA must administer the W-APT if a student answers “yes” to any of the language questions:

What are the uses for W-APT Scores? identifies students (those scoring below 5.0) who may be candidates for ESOL services; determines the academic English language proficiency level of newcomers to a school or to the U.S. school system in order to determine appropriate levels and amounts of instructional services; and may serve as an indicator or guidance when assigning students identified as ELLs to one of the 3 tiers for ACCESS for ELLs.

How many times can you administer W-APT to an ELL? Just once and within the first 30 days of attending school!

W-APT is aligned to the WIDA ELP Standards All 4 domains assessed: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing Assessment forms are developed for grade clusters Pre K-K1-23-5 6-89-12 W-APT is not a tiered assessment Individually administered and fully adaptive

Service ESOL has 6 approved instructional delivery models: Pull-out Push-in Cluster center Resource center / Laboratory Scheduled class period Alternative approved in advance

W-APT Score Information Test materials include instructions for calculating child’s overall composite score For K-W-APT™: –Oral proficiency score (L & S) –Diagnostic information (R & W)
