Transfer students - a growing proportion of our student body but…… 5.6% 7.6%
5
….can be more complicated, more time consuming to advise. How will past credits transfer? When can I expect to graduate? Is there financial help? What are the job possibilities & marketability of my selected major?
6
“Will all my transfer credits count towards my degree?” TRANSFER BASICS BASIC TRANSFER RULES: A maximum of 70 credits transferrable from a Community College If a student brings an AS or AA degree, UI’s General Education Core fulfilled A transfer student (14 or more transferrable credits after high school) automatically goes on State Board Core THE TRANSFER PROCESS: WORKING WITH OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT All official transcripts sent by student to UI Admissions Transcripts evaluated by Registrar’s office (Kate Wray Chettri) Posted on VandalWeb But transcripts should be carefully examined by advisor for “missed opportunities” to have transferred courses “count” www.uidaho.edu/transfer
7
TRANSFER STUDENT RESOURCES FOR ADVISORS The Top Four resources when advising Transfer Students: Degree Audit - tells you how UI “evaluated” the course Transfer Guides www.uidaho.edu/registrar Articulations Substitution/Waiver Forms (internal petitions)
8
What does it mean if a class transfers in as a 000 course ( e.g.,Comm 000, Art 000, Soc. 000)? UI has no equivalent course (free elective credits) No one from that area has formally evaluated that course It may still count as a “core” class….e.g., core social science, or core humanity IT MIGHT MEAN…….
9
Examining the student’s Degree Audit Be on the lookout for other classes that might “count” or be close to a core or degree requirement: ACCT 000 Prin of Accounting I BUS 000 Business Ethics SOC 000 Sociology of Hispanic Culture Can these count as UI’s… …Accounting 201? … Phil 103 Ethics? Can this fulfill the “spirit” of CBE’s Phil 103 Ethics requirement? 1.Go to Transfer Guide 2. Request syllabus A Substitution/ Waiver form [internal petition] Even though no “equivalency” at UI, count as Core Social Science?
10
Commonly Asked Questions from Transfer Students: 4 scenarios
11
“I can’t get into a class because of a pre-req error but I took this pre-req. already.” ***** Use Transfer Guide to see if Math 095 has been evaluated previously by UI. [Yes it has; equivalent to UI’s MATH 108] Verify student has in fact passed with at least a C grade (or will pass if currently in) this course by requesting unofficial transcripts Submit transcript evidence to Math Dept and request override for the relevant Math 143 section on behalf of student Scenario 1 A: Math 143 (pre-req. Math 108)_ Student currently at Columbia Basin College has completed Math 095 Intermediate Algebra. Wants to register for UI’s Math 143 but getting a pre-req. error. UI does not have official transcripts posted yet.
12
“I can’t get into a class because of a pre-req error but I took this pre-req. already.” ****** Use Transfer Guide to see if the school’s Acct 201 has been evaluated previously by UI [No, it has not] Ask student for copy of her Acct 201 syllabus or at minimum a copy of catalog description and have Accounting faculty member evaluate if equivalent. Verify student has in fact passed (or will pass if currently in) this course If deemed equivalent, request a pre-req. override for Acct 202 AND forward to Misty or Kate Wray Chettri in Registrar’s office to add to Transfer G uide Scenario 1 B: Acct 202 (pre-req. Acct 201) Student at Cumberland College in Kentucky wants to register for Acct 202 but getting a pre-req. error. Student says she’s taken this course (Acct 201) already. UI does not have official transcripts yet.
13
“I’m transferring to UI in two semesters. What should I take this quarter at my local college” ******* UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS: what has student taken already and what is left they should be taking during their freshman/sophomore year? ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS: are they from a school we have an articulation with? If so, your job is made much easier! TRANSFER GUIDES: see what courses we have evaluated with their school If none of the above help, provide a checksheet and let student know types of courses they should look for (e.g., natural science course, calculus, a social science, etc.) and to make sure they keep copy of syllabus to be evaluated when they arrive on campus. Scenario 2: Student at College of Western Idaho will be applying to UI next year but wants to stay on track at her local school.
14
“I took a similar class at my local school. Can that count?” ***** TRANSFER GUIDES: see if course has been evaluated [Yes, it is Bus 000] HAVE STUDENT PROVIDE SYLLABUS AND/OR CATALOG DESCRIPTION Have relevant faculty member(s) evaluate course. If sufficiently close to one of our courses, or an acceptable substitute, complete a Substitution/Waiver petition. Scenario 3: A new UI Transfer Student from Boise State University took a Health Care Management course while there. Can that count for one of the elective business classes towards her degree?
15
