SRI SATHYA SAI ENERGY EFFICIENCY UNIT (EEU) AUM SAI RAM LOVE ALL, SERVE ALL
2
With the depletion of natural resources and global increase in human consumption, it has become of greater necessity for devotees to adopt an attitude of change to reduce the crisis that may lead to our own downfall. The sooner we start “becoming the changes we want to see in the world” the greater will be the effects (both positive and cascading) on future generations. Motivation 2
3
The 3 Aspects of Energy Efficiency To physically (via electricity and the elements namely air and water), mentally (via our thoughts) and spiritually (via the divine energy) cut down on our unneeded desires. 3
4
Our Goal To put into practice a Ceiling On Desires (COD) programme and utilise the savings generated for the selfless service of mankind. To enable every member of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation and ultimately our entire country to share in Sathya Sai Love Energy and to become energy efficient individuals. 4

Numbers Don’t Lie Water usage statistics from South African Census 2011: 73.4% of homes have running water 17.8% have to fetch water 8.8% have no access to running water 1.2 million homes around the country without running water 5

Numbers Don’t Lie Electricity statistics: An average of an 8% annual tariff increase between 2013 and 2014 (refer to Eskom tariff booklet www.eskom.co.za)www.eskom.co.za Electricity usage for lighting has increased from 58% in 1996 to 85% in 2011 (Census 2011) 6

To develop EEU’s at Coordinating Committee (CC) level and centre level specialising in aspects of EE to help save Mother Earth To create & distribute a library of information for all individuals, e.g. via national website and awareness campaigns on EE To encourage the COD programme and to utilise the savings generated for selfless service programmes Objectives 10
11
To make and distribute domestic kits (e.g. solar lamps for rural communities and electric-geyser blankets/timers and energy saving bulbs for urban communities) To create an awareness about Earth Hour To practice spiritual disciplines, e.g. silent sitting, Soham, Yoga, Mudra’s, etc. To constantly integrate the different wings in attaining energy efficiency Objectives (Cont.) 11

Refuse Reduce Repair Reuse Recycle Towards Energy Efficiency – The 5 R’s 12
13
Recycling Separate recyclable materials – paper, plastic, glass, metal http://www.petco.co.za, http://www.collectacan.co.za/, http://www.recycling.co.za/, www.treevolution.co.za, Woolworths, PiknPay http://www.petco.co.za http://www.collectacan.co.za/http://www.recycling.co.za/ www.treevolution.co.za Use any left-over organic rubbish (vegetable peels, etc.) as garden fertiliser Avoid plastic bags Electrical appliances must be correctly disposed of (http://www.recycling.co.za/e-waste.htm)http://www.recycling.co.za/e-waste.htm Make sure that all recycling material is clean Do not throw out old medication 13
14
How to Save Water Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth, shaving, lathering your hands Water the garden first thing in the morning Only put FULL loads into the washing machine Collect shower water in a bucket while water is warming up Put the plug in the kitchen sink during the day and use water for washing dishes Only fill the required amount of water in the kettle 14
15
How to Save Electricity Turn the lights off if you are not using a room Switch off the geyser during the day Do not leave the air conditioner on if you do not need it – open windows to create a cross breeze Close the curtains to prevent a room from heating up Switch the TV off when not in use Do not leave cell phone chargers plugged in when not in use 15
16
How to Save Electricity Cover food when storing it in the fridge Use the microwave to reheat food instead of the stove Defrost food manually instead of microwaving Soak food overnight instead of boiling for extended time. (or use a pressure cooker) Switch stove off 5/10 minutes before food is ready. (or use a cooking cushion) Choose foods with a shorter cooking time (Basmati rice) 16
