Publication Bias in Medical Research By Bryan Vieyra “(Publication bias) cannot be reduced by statistical tools because it is not fundamentally a problem of statistics, but rather of non-statistical choices and plain language interpretations.” -Carl Phillips at the Center for Philosophy, Health, and Policy Sciences, Inc., Houston

Publication what? It exists in choosing to alter data, and is there in our medicines, our scientists, and our publishers.  Company scientists profit  Researchers feel they need to To receive pension, they need publication  Even our Publishers select specific data

The Main Victims:  Researchers are stuck in a loop  Us- medicine becomes inaccurate

The Solution  “may be reduced by journals by publishing high-quality studies regardless of novelty or unexciting results.”  -Researcher Song F.,  May be extended to companies as well  Lost incentive to cheat  Overwhelmingly positive results will be buffed down

Alternatively, the FACT ACT The Fair Access to Clinical Act “would require the FDA to expand the clinicaltrials.gov database to create a publicly accessible national data bank of information comprised of a clinical trial registry and a clinical trial results database.” This is our legal stance on the issue.

Does it Work?  Most researchers ignore the law  The Glaxo case proves money can bypass it anyway  GlaxoSmithKline agrees to “pay $3 billion in fines for promoting its best- selling antidepressants for unapproved uses and failing to report safety data about a top diabetes drug.”  HOW MUCH DO THEY MAKE?

Does it Work? (cont’d) NO

The Solution’s Appeal  Journal publications sites and organizations appeal to researchers  People receive less risky medicine
