What is plagiarism? Just give this term some thought … what do you think plagiarism is? Why is the NMMU spending time on this? Have you ever been in a situation where you thought you did something really good and others thought it was someone else – and they then thank them? How did it make you feel? So what do you think plagiarism is?

What is plagiarism? Unintentionally using someone else’s work without acknowledgement or deliberately pretending someone else’s work is your own Presenting ideas, words or results of another person as your own without acknowledgment Using sentences, paragraphs or parts of articles and books without quotation marks or appropriate acknowledgment i.e. a page number Downloading sentences, paragraphs or sections of writings from the internet without quotation marks, page/paragraph numbers or proper acknowledgment Using another’s direct words without quotation marks or page numbers, even if the source is acknowledged Formulating your words very closely to those of the original author even if the source is acknowledged Collaborating with others on work that should be individually undertaken, unless with the permission of the lecturer Self-plagiarism – using your own work without proper citing If in doubt … acknowledge your source!.

NMMU rules re plagiarism The NMMU prospectus refers to plagiarism as misconduct and includes “the copying of another student’s assignment, or copyright infringement” as a part of the definition A disciplinary hearing due to plagiarism can lead to: SERIOUS OFFENCEFirst OffenceSecond Offence PlagiarismSuspension for a period of 1 year Expulsion

Why reference our source? You need to give full reference details in order to: Protect the writer’s intellectual property Enable the reader to find sources Protect the user of the information Give credibility to our writing (evidence and support of our statements) Avoid plagiarism So, how do one avoid plagiarism?

How to avoid plagiarism! Whether from a book, magazine, website, television broadcast, journal, newspaper, interview or governmental law, ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SOURCE in that same paragraph Put quotation marks “____ “ around any key words or sentences that are taken directly from another person's text (and reference this quotation) When you paraphrase someone’s words (changing text to your own words) give credit for his/her ideas by referencing Always provide a Reference list with all the resources you have use; articles, books, internet etc. Keep track of all the sources. Know and apply the basic referencing rules, especially in terms of in-text referencing and the reference list

Features of paraphrasing Paraphrasing: is an essential academic skill keeps the original meaning uses other words can use different word order Even if you paraphrase you must reference it! Harvard example of paraphrasing Archer (2000:2) believes that academic writing can only be developed effectively within the context of the discipline.

REFERENCING: A few basic rules Too much quoting weakens the impact Readers and examiners do not appreciate being confronted with a ‘patchwork' of other people's ideas … it gives no indication of your own abilities as a writer Quotations are most valuable when they are used to support your arguments. They are also used to compare the claims of one theorist with others It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with your departments referencing requirements
