Election of 1860 Candidates- northern democrats- Douglas Candidates- northern democrats- Douglas Southern democrats- John Breckinridge, constitutional union party- John Bell, Republicans- Abe Lincoln Lincoln won the election with less than half the popular vote, defeated his combined opponents in electoral vote by 180 to 123 and he RECIEVED NO ELECTORAL VOTES FROM THE SOUTH.

The South Secedes Lincolns victory convinced southerners that they had lost their political voice in national government South Carolina lead the way seceding from the union on December 20 1860 Mississippi followed on January 9 th 1861. Florida seceded the day after. Within a few weeks Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas had also seceded. They formed confederate states of America and elected Jefferson Davis as their president

Emancipation Proclamation On January 1st 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves within any state. Did not free any slaves immediately but had immense symbolic importance.
