Clerkship Structure Tulane University School of Medicine Family Medicine Clerkship 6 week block 2 beginning of block orientation days (onsite) 1 mid-block teaching day (onsite) 2 end of block project presentation/exam days (onsite)

Clerkship Locations While on-site at the University the time is devoted to teaching core Family Medicine concepts and skills through interactive format Remainder of block spent with Family Medicine preceptors 75% of preceptors in rural areas throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama

We help create a uniformity of experience while students are off site with digitally supported and delivered tools that highlight the implementation of Evidence Based Medicine and the Patient Centered Medical Home

With financial support from the grant our department was able to hire a multi-medial development/IT specialist whom we had on board for approximately 2 years

Support Materials and Resources: Flash Drive contains: –2006 Graham Center Report on the PCMH –Instructions on clerkship teaching objectives –Student evaluations

Further preceptor support: Web access to: –Additional PCMH resource materials –Block by block student administered preceptor site survey examining PCHM adoption status –On-line subscription to STFM’s Teaching Physician

Web access to: –Tulane University School of Medicine’s on-line library –Point-of-service clinical reference site Up-To- Date –Email links to the University’s Mediasite hosted live and recorded faculty development lecture series

Student Support: Web based interactive teaching platforms can be accessed from their rural remote sites Blackboard has served as our platform

Blackboard used for: –Blog host for preceptor led weekly Family Medicine core principle discussion –Repository for: disease oriented lectures Approved video links for selected physical exam techniques FmCASES (replaced our paper based textbook)

SKYPE: –Used for off-site students rurally placed to present clerkship projects to on-site faculty and other students

Web access to Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s web-based modules –Required as off-site pre-participation preparation for on-site interactive Team Based Learning exercise
