Sort the cards into point, evidence and explain – then organise the factors into a hierarchy of importance, justifying your decisions. (B Grade). 3 How important was the leadership of Brigham Young in both leading the Mormons to the Great Lake and then settling there? Sort the cards into Point, Evidence, Explain sentences. He was very important in organising the new settlement at Salt Lake. Brigham planned for the Mormons survival. One idea was to share the land equally and charge everyone a 10% tax on their earnings to share out to the poorest Mormons. He thought of a system to provide clean water for drinking and planting crops. This system ensured land was shared out fairly according to need and ability to farm. This meant that a surplus of crops was grown which could be sold at market. Everyone had access to the same supplies and was charged the same rate of tax so this avoided arguments within the community. There were no law and order issues unlike with the mining community and between the Homesteaders and Cattle Barons.

12 Making a judgement Overall I believe that the most important reason for the Mormons survival at Salt Lake City is… because... Point Evidence Explanation Refer back to the question Overall I believe that the leadership of Brigham Young is the most important reason for Mormon survival because he was an inspirational figure and a brilliant organizer of the journey. He had a plan for the Mormons survival. One idea was to melt snow in the mountains to provide water for crops to grow. This initiative encouraged others to join him. Therefore Salt Lake city was built and population increased providing safety for the Mormons.

13 How important was the leadership of Brigham Young in both leading the Mormons to the Great Lake and then settling there? Conclusion:- To what extent was Brigham Young Important – comment on the relative importance of all factors before making a decision (Level 4: A*). Main line of argument - was he the primary reason? Yes or No? What are the alternative factors that helped settle salt lake? Alternative Factors:- (Level 3: B/A if PEE) 1) 1848 Salt Lake Valley became US territory – Brigham Young became governor but the Mormons ignored US laws. In 1857 the US appointed non- Mormon governor who arrived with 2500 troops. Mountain Meadow Massacre – US adopted a policy of negotiation which meant Mormons NOT driven out. 2) Very hard working obedient people – Gods chosen people – already made successful settlements at Kirtland, Missouri and Nauvoo. Did not believe in Individual land ownership – good of the community – no arguments 3) Completion of Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 made travel for new converts easier/bring technology/supplies needed esp. industrial as Mormons were unable to become self sufficient – sell surplus crops to East The importance of Brigham Young's organisational and leadership skills…(Level 2: C) Inspired by God –not confrontational like Smith – wanted to lead Mormons away to a new Zion away from gentiles Preparations from move away from Nauvoo began in 1845 – route mapped out using guide books – pioneer band sent to set up Camp Israel (1 st of stations set up all along the route with supplies and crops for the Mormons following. Rather than suffer fate of Donner Party – Winter Quarters set up – then pioneer band to Salt Lake to make a start on the settlement. Organised the wagons so travelled in parallel lines – camped in circles for protection at night – strict discipline. Once at Utah land distributed according to family size and skill, irrigation channels, PEF. Once at Salt Lake Brigham planned for the Mormons survival. One idea was to share the land equally and charge everyone a 10% tax on their earnings to share out to the poorest Mormons. He thought of a system to provide clean water for drinking and planting crops.
