► North Carolina grew from a population of 21000 in 1720 to 73000 by 1750 ► By 1750, around 25% were slaves ► Most of the slaves were concentrated in the eastern part of the state where plantations were located

Great Wagon Road ► Trail that extended from PA to NC ► Brought settlers (mainly German and Scotch-Irish) to NC ► Traveled on land because of the lack of good ports in NC

The Wealthy East ► Coastal Plain region contained some plantations but not as many as other colonies ► Plantation owners controlled the government of NC

New Arrivals ► Settlers from the North arrived from the Great Wagon Road and settled in the Piedmont ► New ethnic groups (Scotch-Irish, German, Irish, etc) ► Yeoman farmers(small farms, few if any slaves, did all own work)
