George WashingtonGeorge Washington Colonel in the Virginia militia Ordered to build a fort in the Ohio River Valley French already occupied the territory and had a fort of their own Washington built his own fort and attacked the French Shortly after, George Washington’s forces were attacked and he was forced to surrender “I heard the bullets whistle, and believe me, there is something charming in the sound!”

Braddock “ halted to level every mole hill and to erect bridges over every brook by which means we were four days getting twelve miles ” (Washington) Braddock ’ s Dilemma: Tried to fight a European style war in the wilderness of Pennsylvania.

Braddock ’ s force is routed and retreats in disarray. During the battle on July 9 th Braddock is mortally wounded. Braddock dies and is buried in the middle of the road he built and the remainder of his army marches over him to hide the grave from the French and their allies.

Treaty of ParisTreaty of Paris After seven years of fighting, France finally surrendered to Britain 1763: Treaty of Paris was signed France gave up all land East of the Mississippi River and all of Canada to Britain Colonists had new land to the West in which they could occupy

Pontiac Native Americans were not happy Did NOT want to leave their land in the Ohio River Valley Leader in Chief Pontiac Commanded 40 different Native American tribes Attacked one British settlement after another “He is shrewd, sensible, and of few words. Pontiac commands more respect among these people than any I have ever seen.”

British Trappers and Settlers refuse to pay Native Americans for the use of the land. Chief Pontiac puts together a Native American Alliance and strikes back at the British. Pontiac fails to capture key terrain. Pontiac ’ s War ends in 1765.
