Mount Rushmore Location: South Dakota Construction began: October 4, 1927 Construction ended: July 2, 1939 President's on the monument (from left to right): George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt

The Statue of Liberty Location: New York City, New York Construction began: 1877 Construction ended: July, 1884 Built by the French as a symbol of peace and friendship to the United States and was dedicated on October 28, 1886.

9/11 Memorial Location: New York City, New York Construction began: March, 2006 Dedication ceremony: September 11, 2011 Built to honor the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

U.S.S. Arizona Memorial Location: Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii Constructed in 1962 Declared a National Historic Landmark on May 5, 1989. Built over the resting place of the U.S.S. Arizona to honor the American lives lost during the Japanese surprise attack on December 7, 1941.

Alcatraz Island Location: San Francisco Bay, California Years of operation as U.S. federal prison: 1934-63 Famous inmates: Al Capone and Robert Stroud. Established as a museum in 1973.
