1 Lecture 3a Source of idea
2
2 Externally: lead users, experts, product association, patents, etc Internally: focus of this lecture to improve your creativity
3
3 Approach to enhance creativity Idea construction based on function Analogical study Brainstorming 6-3-5 method Empathy Inversion Box of tools
4
Lecture 14 1.Idea construction based on function Task: to get rid of the mice from house Functions: trap, catch, kill, get rid Trap: mouse trap, cage, glue Catch: cat, catch by yourself Kill: poison Get rid: tidy up the store, clean your house
5
5 2.Analogical Analogical study mostly based on experience, exposure and knowledge. Therefore, idea can be generated through reading, patent, expert, similar product i.e: In 1843, Sir March Lambard Brunel has the idea to build tunnel across Thames River resulted from his observation on worm built hole in wood trunk
6
Lecture 16 3.Brainstorming The main idea of brainstorming to create idea developed from the group. Rule of brainstorming is to generate and keep moving with No idea is excluded No criticism or analysis at this point Keep moving Keep on topic Adapt or add to existing ideas
7
7 3a.Brainstorming Stage 1: Generate Stage 2: Narrow down the ideas Stage 3: Develop the ideas Stage 4: Pick one idea Stage 5: Follow through with the idea
8
8 Stage 1: Generate No idea is excluded No criticism or analysis at this point Keep moving Keep on topic Adapt or add to existing ideas
9
9 Stage 2: Narrow down the ideas Analyze the existing ideas Decide applicability Decide feasibility Criticize constructively Choose 10 ideas to develop
10
10 Stage 3: Develop the ideas Produce scenarios for each idea Build up ideas to workable form Reevaluate all aspects of each Attempt to foresee problems Possible to generate a new idea by combining two or more ideas
11
11 Stage 4: Pick one idea Base on evaluation on Stage 2 criteria, weigh pros and cons of each idea. Compare ideas from Stage 3 Discuss choices and agree upon one
12
12 Stage 5: Follow through with the idea Make working adaptations as needed. Feel free to redo this process with different problem that may occurs
13
13 4.6-3-5 method 6: ideal for 6 persons ( 3 – 8 are allowed) 3: each person should create 3 ideas 5: 5 minutes time is set Every person is given a piece of A4 paper and the paper will be divided into 3 columns. Ideas can be sketched or text written and must be clear enough to explain the idea. After 5 minutes, the paper is passed to person to the right and the person will add more ideas. Finally, the team has discuss the best possibilities
14
14 5.Empathy Put yourself in the position of the key part. e.g: -Design a better walking aid for a person for person with an atrophied leg - design a rat trap
15
15 6.Inversion Traditionally, start design of car by looking at the dimensions first, and then try to fit the occupants inside the vehicle Inversion suggests that the design of the car can start from the occupants in the car and then build it around the people
16
16 7.Box of tools - Have a collection of mechanisms, gadgets, paper, clips, rubber bands etc. - Allows you quickly build a simple model to demonstrate an idea
17
17 Hindrance to creativity - Preconceived idea - Limitation in using word especially in function - Knowledge - Experience
