Signed into law by President William McKinley on May 25, 1900 and is a national law It protects plants and animals and punishes the trade of plants or animals that have been illegally taken from their habitat or sold. Its purpose is to aid the restoration of animals that are endangered species or extinct in certain regions. It was put in place as a result of the illegal hunting of endangered and threatened animals in the early 1900’s, jeopardizing their already dropping population.

Penalties for an offense of this law include a fine and a suspension of their hunting or fishing license. Agencies enforcing the Act may detain and inspect vessels and containers upon entry and departure from the U.S., and require the production of documents and permits for transportation Also prohibits the importing of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and brown tree snakes which the Secretary declares to be dangerous to humans, agriculture, horticulture, forestry or wildlife.
