Importance of Breakfast Before breakfast you may have been fasting for 10-12 hours Kick starts your metabolism for the day Provides energy & helps you feel alert throughout the morning Research tells us students who eat breakfast do better in school than those that do not Can help start your day off right by choosing healthy options

What you eat matters! Long lasting energy Combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and little fat Example: bowl of oatmeal with fruit Spurt of energy that quickly fades High sugar, high fat Example: doughnut, pop tarts

Breakfast Planning Purpose: to prepare a variety of healthy breakfast foods that taste good and are nutrient dense. Breakfast Lab: Wednesday 3/4 (gold) & Thursday 3/5 (blue) Everyone in your kitchen must agree on 1 Grain 1 Fruit 1 Protein Each person in the group may choose their own beverage. Divide tasks out evenly. Think through each step and decide who will be in charge of what. Turn in: Lab choices and group plan. No RAIL for this lab PLEASE ASK IF YOU HAVE ?’s

Carbohydrates: Provide the body’s main source of energy Fats: Stored energy as well as insulation for the body Proteins: Help build, repair, and maintain body tissues Vitamins: Help regulate many body processes (boost the immune system, promote normal growth and development) Minerals: Help the body work properly Water: Participates in chemical reactions in the body and helps transport materials to and from cells

Nutrients and Their Sources Carbohydrates breads and grains, starchy vegetables and sugar Protein meat, dairy, beans or eggs Fat Choose healthy options such as omega-3-rich foods like fish, walnuts and vegetable-based oils, nuts, seeds and avocado Vitamins Vitamin C: citrus fruits, strawberries and peppers. Minerals Potassium: bananas, potatoes and tomatoes Calcium: milk, low-fat cheese and yogurt Water Fruits, vegetables, drinking water

Energy is measure in calories Pure Carbs = 4 calories per gram Pure Protein = 4 calories per gram Pure Fat = 9 calories per gram Basal Metabolism Resting metabolism Energy used for sleep, digestion, vital processes.

Digestion the mechanical and chemical process that breaks food down to release nutrients that your body can absorb. What is basal metabolism? The energy your body uses to maintain automatic processes, like breathing & digesting food. What 5 factors impact your daily requirement? Gender, age, weights, activity levels, BMR

Myth or Fact Claim: fortified snacks have the same amount of nutrients as fresh produce? Myth—although you can find really good snacks out there read the label to see. If a fruit or vegetable is not in the top 3 ingredients, the snack is not worthwhile. Claim: You can get your omega-3 intake from packaged foods like orange juice, bagels, or pasta that has been enriched with these heart healthy fatty acids. Myth: you would have to drink about thirty 8-ounce glasses to match the omega-3 benefits found in a 3-ounce piece of salmon.

Myth or Fact Claim: Fresh produce is packed with nutrients that can protect your memory, vision and immune system. Fact: a range in produce color is important to consume to get all the various benefits. Claim: Probiotic boosted yogurt will keep your digestive system healthy. Fact: probiotics will help you stay regular. Mix up your yogurt brands because the different bacterial strains will help your resistance to colds & infections.
