Major Risk Factors for Cancer Smoking is the single largest preventable risk factor for cancer, responsible for 30% of all cancers. Excessive alcohol is responsible for 6% of all cancers, particularly Mouth, Gullet, Breast and Liver Obesity is responsible for 3% of all cancer deaths (10% of breast cancer, 25% kidney, 35% oesophagus and 40% of womb cancer deaths)
