Lego League

What is the Lego League?
3
What we will be doing for the next few weeks The AIM of the next few weeks is to gain knowledge into programming, robotics and teamwork. What is programming: Programming is telling something what to do by giving instructions. What is robotics: Robotics means anything to do with robots. For us this will be using a Lego robot that we will program. In the last week we will complete a course testing the skills we have learnt
4
Plan of the next few weeks WeekTask 1Introduction to the Lego League and basic programming. 2Advanced programming and track design. 3Building the program and understanding the robot. 4Race Week.

Word search time !!! Now know what we are doing it is time to test your knowledge. TO THE WORDSEARCH

How the robot works The robot or NXT is powered by a brain. It is just like the brain you have, it remembers different sets of instructions and plays them back. When you program the NXT on the computer you can use images to tell the NXT what to do, you then change smaller details (known as variables) to meet you instruction such as move forward 3 seconds. The NXT has different tools it can use.
9
Different Tools
10
How you connect to the software You can connect the NXT to the computer using USB. This is the same way you connect your keyboard, mouse, printer or camera. Do you know any other USB devices? You can also connect using Bluetooth, unlike USB you do not use a cable. Do you know any Bluetooth devices?
11
Using the software
12
MindStorm MindStorm is the programming software we use for the NXT. It is very simple to use and you will be up and running in no time. How do we install the software? How do we run the software? How do we use the software?
13
How we use the software? You need to now be in 2 groups and we will begin to look at the software on the computer. What we will cover: Loading the software. Creating a new project. Making a basic forward backwards program. Installing the program to the NXT. Running the program.
14
Your task for today Design and install a program that will make the robot move forward 5 seconds, turn right 90’, move forward 2 seconds, turn left 90’, move forward 2 seconds, turn left 90’ and then move forward 5 seconds. What did you notice? – Did you finish where you started? – How difficult was it? Additional task. Make a small program that will make the robot move around the room. Remember to work as a team
15
Additional tasks How would a robot help in real world situations? Design an agility course to build and run robots on next week Design a program as a group to show what you have learn so far.
