What is a landform? A landform is a feature that makes up the earths surface.

Different Landforms Strait Peninsula Bay Mountain Valley Plateaus Island Ocean Lake Waterfall

Strait A narrow channel that connects two larger bodies of water. The Straits of Mackinac connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

Peninsula A piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula.

Bay An inlet of a body of water. Inwardly curved part of shoreline.

Mountain High, rocky land with steep sides and a rounded or pointed top. A mountain is higher than a hill.

Valley Low land between hills or mountains.

Plateau Flat highland area with one steep face

Island An area of land completely surrounded by water.

Ocean Large body of salt water.

Lake Large body of fresh water surrounded by land.

Waterfall Place where running water makes a sheer drop, usually over a cliff

Can you think of examples of specific landforms? Mountains? Lakes? Oceans? Waterfalls? Straits? Peninsulas? Islands? Plateaus? Valleys? Bays?
