Notes (Hamnet) Drawing has been removed from a folio size backing, which was labeled in pencil 'Merry wives of Windsor' but drawing was probably not executed to illustrate that play. Notes (Hamnet) History: Wright was known to have done numerous designs for literary annuals of the 19th century which were known to illustrate their pages with items of this nature. This item may have been intended as an illustration for an annual though there is no evidence of publication. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Drawing is part of a collection of 122 Shakespearean watercolors, most of which are attributed to Wright. The collection was purchased from a private owner by 'Sabin' ca. 1898 and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells, April 28, 1920 (ART Inventory 289 no.32 - Case 889). Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawing pictures a woman wearing a mask and long pink robe. Her finger is held up to her lips and with the other hand she is either receiving a note from or passing a note to a man who wears a cape. Five or six figures are pictured around the man and woman, on the right a clown or fool and on the left a girl dressed as a cupid with wings and a quiver of arrows. Notes (Hamnet) Title derived from pencil note in lower left corner. "J.M.W." is also in pencil in the same hand, lower right corner. Call Number (Hamnet) ART Box W951 no.119 (size S)
