Academic Language Indents/Indentation: the start of a line that is further away from the margin than the rest of the text. Illegible: print or text that is unclear to read. Legible: print or text that is clear to read. Margin: the border or edge of a text. Vertical: Being situated at right angles to the horizon.

Definition of Presentation in Writing Taken from: educationnorthwest.org/traits/trait-definitions#presentation "Presentation combines both visual and textual elements. It is the way we exhibit or present our message on paper. Even if our ideas, words and sentences are vivid, precise, and well constructed, the writing will not be inviting to read unless it follows the guidelines of presentation. These include: balance of white space with visuals and text, graphics, neatness, handwriting, font selection, borders, and overall appearance."

Presentation Traits Paragraphs are indented. Margins are correct. Writing is double spaced. Font is legible. Title and Pages Numbered. Overall appearance is neat.

Paragraphs All paragraphs are indented properly: Incorrect: I did not indent my paragraph. Do you see how the lines are all in the same alignment, because I did not indent the first sentence? That is not correct in formal writing. I did it again in the second paragraph as well. I forgot to indent. Next time I need to make sure that I am using indentation properly when I turn in a formal writing assignment. To conclude, in the third paragraph, I also did not indent. I will not do this when I turn in a formal writing assignment to my teacher. Correct: This is my first paragraph and I remembered to indent. Whenever I have a formal writing assignment I must remember this important rule. All I have to do is press the tab button on the left of the keyboard. I want to say something else about this topic, so I have started a second paragraph. Indenting helps the reader understand the flow of your thoughts and ideas. To conclude, I will always remember to indent my paper.

Margins What are margins? Margins are the white space on the edge of your paper. When turning in a formal paper, your margins should be set to 1.0 inch for top, bottom, left and right of your paper. Word is already automatically set to these margins, so you don't need to change them.

Double-Spacing Your sentences should be double- spaced (2.0). Not single or 1.5 or anything bigger than 2.0. Please look at the visual. Note the unhighlighted section. That is single-spaced (1.0) and therefore it is incorrect. Please look at the highlighted section, the line spacing is set at 2.0 so it is correct. What is double-spacing? The vertical space between your sentences.

Font is Legible Times New Roman in size 12pt is standard for formal writing.

Title with Numbered Pages Give your personal narrative a title. Make sure pages are numbered.

Overall Neat Appearance The presentation of your personal narrative should be neat. Take a step back and look at the overall appearance of your paper, to make sure it is neat and presentable.

Final Essay: How will my educational experience help me reach my future goals and make me a successful citizen? Due: 05/16/2016 Rubric: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation

Work Time Please go through your personal narrative and make the appropriate changes if necessary to: paragraphs (all indented), margins (1.0), line spacing (2.0), font (Times New Roman font 12pt), and add Title and numbered pages.

Exit Ticket What is presentation in writing? What are some traits of presentation? Something new I learned or something I will use in my writing from now on is…
