Attendance Since listening and evaluating speeches are vital activities for a speech student, regular class attendance is imperative. More than 3 unexcused absences will lower a student’s course average one letter grade. Any absence on the day that the student is scheduled to give a speech lowers that speech grade one letter for each class meeting the speech is late, unless the absence is excused and the student presents documentation (proof, as described below) on the day of return to class. Specifically, the following guidelines will apply for attendance:
9
Attendance Excused Absences:Absences will only be excused for one of the following reasons, and documentation must be presented to the instructor verifying the legitimacy of the absence: (1) ILLNESS (medical documentation verifying a doctor’s office/clinic visit is required for an absence to be excused due to illness); (2) DEATH IN THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY (documentation is required); (3) OFFICIAL COLLEGE FUNCTION (coach or instructor letter verifying mandatory attendance at the function must be provided prior to the absence).
10
Attendance Unexcused Absences:All absences not meeting the criteria above will be unexcused. 1 – 3 unexcused absences = No Impact on Semester Grade 4 – 5 unexcused absences = Loss of 1 letter grade for semester > 5 unexcused absences = Fail the course (F) Asleep in Class:Appearing to be asleep in class is the same as an unexcused absence (no warning) Absent on Speech Day:Student will present the speech at the next regularly scheduled class meeting unless other arrangements are made with the instructor prior to that next class.
