Settlement Patterns Dispersed Settlements: Scattering of people over an area Occur in rural areas, mountainous areas, extensive flat lands, rolling hills Linear Settlements: Grouping of houses along a straight line Follow railways, roadways, and along coast lines Nucleated Settlements: grouping of many houses around a center “nucleus” Found at road intersections, focal points of an area, or confluence of a river

Answer the following questions: What time period did the majority of the urban growth occur? What caused the urban growth in this region? What economic factors played a role in urban growth? What changes did society experience during the urbanization of this area? Was it a smooth transition? Show two before and after photos, charts, and/or images documenting how the area changed Is the area considered a strong or weak economic region now? Why? What is the quality of life in the region today? What evidence do we have of this? Option #1 - Research an urban area

Option 2 – Urbanization Photo Essay Each photo essay shall include 6-8 photos of growing urbanization in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries Each photo shall have a summary of a minimum of 3 sentences explaining the photo, important dates, locations and other details and/or how the photo represents urbanization Show 3 before and after photos/charts/images, documenting how the area changed Is the area considered a strong of weak region now? Why? What is the quality of life in the region today? What evidence do we have of this?
