Short Stories What makes them different???

What is it?? Any story that has the right elements Possibilities are endless –No 2 stories are ever the same

What does it HAVE to have? All short stories must have characters and characterization Characters are directed by motivation –The reason(s) that explain why they act as they do

What is characterization Characterization is the way a writer reveals a character’s –Personality –Qualities 2 types –Indirect – describes the character –Direct – reveals through speech and actions Its the reader’s job to figure out why they act that way.

THEME!!! The central message expressed in a story A Universal theme reoccurs in a story –This expresses the same message across cultures and time periods Name some common universal themes Always makes a connection real life!!

Literary Devices Tools writers use to enhance their writing Foreshadowing –The use of clues early in a story to hint at events that will occur later Flashback –The placement ofa scene within a story that interrupts the sequence of events to reveal the past

Literary Devices Irony –The general name given to literary techniques that involve surprising, interesting, etc. contradictions Dialect –The form of a language spoken by people in a particular region or group
