So where were we? Our curriculum was judged outstanding. Moved down a skills based route and were leading our lessons with a skill. Patchy across school as to the level that skills were being taught. Assessment ladders were created to support this. Focussed on History, geography and DT. Hardly any other wider subjects being taught regularly. Our English and Maths skills were continually, rapidly improving. Why couldn’t the two tally? Why couldn’t the two tally?

Work scrutiny and monitoring highlighted issues within our curriculum… Inconsistency in teaching Confusion of both children and teachers. Leaning on APP to enable assessment to the detriment of creativity. Lack of pupil voice. Lack of transference of basic skills and presentation Good coverage! Digging Deeper

Steps to leading the curriculum forward How could we improve on what we have? Consultant worked with SLT to coach out the ideal curriculum. Key Issue and PDM planning. Leading from the front and testing it out! Monitoring and evaluating

So what does it look like now? Whole school philosophy. Basic skills at the heart of the curriculum. Children at the centre, driving each topic. Flexible. More accurate assessment of the wider curriculum subjects. Greater emphasis on the wider curricular subjects and things are being taught!!! Questioning, creativity and reflection are being nurtured in the children making them more independent learners. Enjoyment of all.

Topic Journey Context What is the big question? Pre-Learning What do the children need to know? Hook What will get the children inspired Basic Skills What skills can be transferred? Coverage How does this big question enable me to assess the wider subjects ? Am I balancing out the subjects I am assessing? Journey How am I collecting evidence? Outcome How can we answer the big question? (Give it a purpose) Reflection What have they learnt? How have they learnt it?

Space Learning Journey…

Journey of the learning that has gone on in the classroom. Evidence of the questions and work that the children have done to be able to achieve the answers. Display key literacy and numeracy skills. Doesn’t need to be polished!! Photocopy work ASAP and bung it up with pins! Can be a plain wall or make it creative/link to the topic that is being studied. Learning Walls
