What are the soft skills/transferable skills employers want and say are lacking? negotiation & persuade, listening and understanding, self- development, self-analysis, self-motivation, independent learning, using feedback, managing stress, using online resources, communicating digitally, enterprise & commercial awareness, understanding customers, social responsibility, delivering results, planning for success, adapting to change, decision making, team working, innovation, problem analysis, designing solutions, pitch ideas, workplace literacy, professionalism, resilience, financial awareness skills that employers want or say are lacking - very few say want a distinction but all say want behaviours

There are an estimated nine million working aged adults in England (more than a quarter of adults aged 16-65) with low literacy or numeracy skills or both. – OECD 8. 7 Taking a holistic approach to unitisation Example of unit 407- interview skills Set a project/ exercise over a number of weeks: setting up mock interview and video clips of good and bad interviews. Discuss as a group and make notes Either provide a number of different job vacancies or issue a local newspaper and ask learners to select a job vacancy they would be interested in 1.Find out about the company, where is it based, how long has it been in business? 2.Think of 5 questions they may want to ask you- think of the responses you may give, what could you say if you didn’t understand the questions? 3.What type of documents would you need to bring to an interview? 4.From the videos you have watched what different techniques have you seen 5.How would you get to the interview? 6. Think about what you could do to give a good impression: 7. How would you prepare that morning ? What would you wear and why?

Discuss as a group and make notes. In groups, students to take part in mock interviews and each say what went well and what could they improve on in a short presentation. (2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5) (3.1,3.2, 3.3) B.Either provide a number of different job vacancies or issue a local newspaper and ask learners to select a job vacancy they would be interested in (1.1) 1.Find out about the company, where is it based, how long has it been in business? (1.1) 2.Think of 5 questions they may want to ask you- think of the responses you may give, what questions do you think you would want to ask? what could you say if you didn’t understand the questions? (1.2,1.3,1.5 ) 3.What type of documents would you need to bring to an interview? (1.6) 4.From the videos you have watched what different interview techniques have you seen/learnt (1.4) 5.How would you get to the interview? (1.7) 6. Think about what you could do to give a good impression: (2.1,2.2) 7.What would you do to prepare for the day ? What would you wear and why? (3.3) 8.Produce a mind map showing what you have learnt and you would plan for an interview (3.3)
