6 Question 2 Answer: 80% of what number is 4? For this problem, we will look at 3 different solutions. Note that all 3 methods will work all the time; however, Method 3 works best when you are given answers to choose from. 11 Question 2 Solution 2.01: 80% of what number is 4? Method 2: Algebraic Solution D ISCUSSION : An alternative to solving by using the Percent Proportion is to convert the verbal sentence to an algebraic equation; and then, solve the resulting equation for the unknown. This conversion is easy if, in addition to remembering that the Part is the number associated with the word “is” and the Whole is the number associated with the word “of”, you remember two things … 1. In math, EVERY TIME you see “fraction of a number” or “percent of a number” the word “of” indicates multiplication. 2. The words “is” and “was” indicate equality. (Click NEXT to view the solution.) 15 Question 2 Solution 3.01: 80% of what number is 4? Method 3: “Guess-and-Check” Solution D ISCUSSION : Even though as children the “Guess-and-Check” method of solving problems came quite naturally, as we get older we tend to either overlooked this method or to think of it as something that is beneath us. However, it is foolishness on our part to disregard such a useful tool. In its most basic form, “Guess-and-Check” involves making a random guess, then checking to see if it works in the original problem. The difficulty with this approach is that it can prove to be frustrating and time consuming. That is why I use a method I call “Systematic Guess-and-Check”. With “Systematic Guess-and-Check” we make more “educated guesses”, thereby improving our chances of guessing correctly. Below are some ways to do this. 1.First, take a “big picture” view of the problem. Ask yourself such things as … *Is the value I’m looking for bigger or smaller than the given value? *Is it bigger (or smaller) by a little or a lot? 2. Based on what you decide in Step 1, make your first guess, then check to see how close you are. 3.If you arrive at the correct value, you are done. If not, do one of the following. *If your check yields a value that is slightly high, adjust your guess DOWN a little. If it is way too high, adjust your guess DOWN a lot. *If your check yields a value that is slightly low, adjust your guess UP a little. If it is way too high, adjust your guess UP a lot. 4.Repeat Step 3 until you arrive at the correct value. (Click NEXT to view the solution.) 23 Solution: Framework Method Discussion: Although it is possible to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers either horizontally or vertically, I have found that most of my students prefer – and have more success with – a vertical setup. I suspect this is because the vertical setup allows room to expand the solution to the right and minimizes how much your eyes have to shift back and forth across the page. My solution is based on a method I call “The Framework Approach to Adding and Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers.” Some nice things about this method are … 1.It helps you keep your work organized, making it easier for you to verify and troubleshoot your work. 2.This one method can be used to add fractions, subtract fractions, add mixed numbers, subtract mixed numbers, and compare fractions.
