America’s Houses of Worship If America’s 370,000 congregations cut energy use just 10% would save: Save nearly $315 million for missions, other priorities Provide more than 1.8 billion “new” kWh electricity without additional cost and pollution Prevent more than 1.3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions Equivalent to the emissions of about 240,000 cars Equivalent to planting nearly 300,000 million acres of trees But, 30% savings are typical…nearly $1 billion can be saved

10 EPA Rating Objectives Motivate Houses of Worship to develop a strategic approach to energy management Convey information about energy performance in a simple metric that can be understood by all levels of the organization and members of the congregation

11 EPA Ratings Characteristics Monitor actual as-billed energy data Create a whole building indicator Capture the interactions of building systems not individual equipment efficiency Track energy use accounting for weather and operational changes over time Provide a peer group comparison Compare a building’s energy performance to its national peer group Track how changes at a building level alter the building’s standing relative to its peer group

12 EPA Ratings Technical foundation The rating does Evaluate as billed energy use relative to building operations Normalize for operational characteristics (e.g., size, seating capacity, hours of operation, climate) Depend on a statistically representative sample of the US commercial building population The rating does not Attempt to sum the energy use of each piece of equipment Normalize for technology choices or market conditions (e.g., type of lighting, energy price) Explain why a building operates as it does

13 Religious Worship Required Inputs Gross floor area Measured from exterior walls Include area at the base of any space with vaulted or high ceilings Include the building with the worship area only (not other buildings located next door) Rating only applies to facilities that are at least 1,000 square foot Maximum seating capacity Maximum permanent seating capacity If no seating area, the maximum number of worshipers that can be accommodated in the main worship areas Rating only applies to facilities that have at least 25 seats but no more than 4,000 seats

14 Religious Worship Required Inputs Weekdays of operation Select from number from 0 to 5 Can included times when building is used for religious services, choir practice, administrative functions, committee meetings, classes, or other community activities Hours of operation per week Approximate hours of operation each week Number of personal computers Count of personal computers as may be found in administrative areas or to support audio-visual capabilities. This includes servers.

15 Religious Worship Required Inputs Presence of cooking facilities Yes - institutional/commercial cooking occurs to support receptions or other functions No - there is only a small area with a microwave Number of commercial refrigeration units Include - walk-in refrigeration or other larger units Do not include - vending machines or residential-type refrigerators Don’t forget to include Parking Lots if they are on the main building meter.
