Learning Target: I can investigate the Platt Amendment to understand the results of the Spanish-American War. Do Now: Write a prediction for the Spanish American War.

How did the U.S. get involved in Spanish American War? President McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to stop riots breaking out. The following month the Maine exploded in the harbor, killing 260 soldiers. U.S. felt Spain was behind it, U.S. demanded Cuba’s independence, Spain did not respond, and the war began.

Spanish-American War Spain vs. America U.S. wanted to help Spain’s colonies receive its freedom from Spain. (Cuba), Cuba and Spain fighting, Cuba wants independence from Spain. Why get involved if you are the U.S.? U.S. traded with Cuba, if Cuba was at war it would disrupt the business between America/Cuba U.S. did not want war but did not want Spain to mistreat Cuba.

Results of the Spanish-American War “Remember the Maine!”- became the call to arms. Battles of the Spanish American war took place in Spanish colonies: War in the Philippines War in the Caribbean Spain surrenders, U.S. defeats Spain with the help of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, gain Spain’s colonies of Guam, Philippines, and Puerto Rico. U.S. becomes a world power with new territories in various parts of the world.
