How the DLF Works

1. 2. 3. A digital entrepreneur comes up with an innovative and exciting idea involving the use of copyright protected works. The entrepreneur knows it needs permission to use the works but doesn’t know how to get it. There are basic questions to answer: What works or catalogue of works are available for use? How to describe accurately the use for which permission is sought? Who can grant the necessary permission? What are the likely terms of the permission? The entrepreneur comes across a new DLF Licensing App (example of an application which could have been sponsored by TSB) on the internet that uses the DLF Services to deliver answers to the entrepreneur's questions.
4
4. The entrepreneur finds some suitable copyright works. Using the Licensing App he is able to compose a licensing request in respect of the works. 5. The DLF Messaging Hub actions the licensing request by querying databases run by the rights holders of the works in question. The Licensing App then returns information to the entrepreneur about possible licensing options; it also provides the contact information for the rights holder. 6. For some of the works, the entrepreneur is redirected to an online licensing facility operated by the rights holder. For others, he is invited to contact the rights holder by phone to discuss a licensing agreement.
