3 IEF, April 20053 China: HIV/AIDS Statistics in China (2003) China’s pop: 1.3 billion Official prevalence rate: 840,000 or 0.1% (excluding those who had died) AIDS-related deaths: 30,000 IDUs: 44% Plasma donation: 24% Sexual transmission: 20% in Hubei province (2005) Province’s pop: 58.25 million Official prevalence rate: 2,262 HIV/AIDS cases or 0.004% Plasma donation: 61.3% Others: sex and IDUs If HIV/AIDS is not made a priority in China – 10 million affected by 2010 and serious social and economic challenges to the country

6 IEF, April 20056 Migrant Workers 50 weeks away from families Working in hard conditions Staying in same sex dormitories/camp sites Little access to HIV/AIDS prevention information and services Easy targets for drug sellers Have ample opportunities to interact with commercial sex workers Thus, they may become a “bridge” for spreading the HIV from high-prevalence to low-prevalence areas

7 IEF, April 20057 Shiman Road Worker Survey 2% of the construction workers and administrative staff involved in the Shiman project were surveyed 99% - men of 40 or younger 300-350 days a year of not seeing their families/partners 99% - junior high school education level

8 IEF, April 20058 Shiman Road Worker HIV/AIDS Awareness 16.2% aware of HIV/AIDS transmission methods 39.5% HIV/AIDS transmitted by mosquitoes’ bites 71.4% know how to use condoms 35.1% never and 26% rarely use condoms 32.6% know where HIV/AIDS counselling and blood testing services are available 23.2 % believe that people infected with HIV/AIDS should be isolated from society

10 10 Shiman Outputs Training of 15 health and medical workers Educational training on HIV/AIDS at 4 constructions sites: –200 (5%) road workers –120 (25%) administrative staff –50 (1%) villagers Dissemination of educational materials, pictures and discussion of stigma and discrimination problems Literature show by some educational team members, road workers and villagers Educational programs related to HIV/AIDS subject Interview on television
