All around us, i.e. DVD, downloading information, Internet, intranet, CD-ROM etc. Helpful to guide people by simple examples Association of Learning Technology - http://www.alt.ac.uk/http://www.alt.ac.uk/ Examples Yorkshire/Lincolnshire (23 Trusts) Managed Learning Environment (MLE) – courses, tracking, registration etc. Lots happening on clinical side but not much on Informatics Hull and York Medical School’s virtual pilot on NHS induction Derbyshire All ETD leads are mapping courses available What is happening/what do we need Some developments Technology is a problem – wide variety in hardware and software Nottinghamshire Variable with some effective projects in conjunction with University of Derby Leicestershire e-learning at University Hospitals of Leicester Access a problem, although people are wanting e-learning option Knowledge and Skills Framework will act as a driver for e-learning Libraries need to be ‘core’ in terms of information and presence Needs to be closer merging between learning, IT and knowledge management Change and re-organisation not helpful to this process Back

Allow user to interact with program to find answers If there’s a mismatch between the e-learning course and what you need to know If it’s not up to date If the technology is too sophisticated for the available equipment Lack of a tutor or contact with other people American voices Lack of a timescale for completion Why People need interaction – do not like looking at lots of text. Balance between text and animation Lack of top level commitment may lead to the failure of e-learning projects There is no one size fits all approach to e-learning. Needs to be pitched at the right level. What does work Tracking progress, assessment and ability to revisit parts of the course easily Recognition of different learning styles Bite-sized approach Clear learning objectives Protected time in which to undertake course Sharing Access to supporting material in other formats Access to good IT support Chat room/discussion forums for peer support (needs to be properly facilitated) Back

Should the NHSU act as a central repository for e-learning courses Compile a database of the e-learning material available One Learning Management System (LMS)/Managed Learning Environment (MLE) for region/NHS Develop relations with internal and external contacts to explore areas for collaboration on e-learning Utilise confederation Knowledge Managers As per Derby University – committees and sub-groups to direct e-learning within region/NHS NHSU should be responsible for accrediting courses that are developed Back
