5 PROTIST PRODUCERS (PLANT-LIKE) Red Algae- most of the world’s seaweeds. Red pigment allows them to absorb light that filters deep into the water. Red Algae can grow as deep as 260m below the surface of the water. Brown Algae- Seaweeds that are found in cooler climates. Green Algae- live in water or moist soil. They have chlorophyll which contributes to the green color.

6 PROTIST PRODUCERS (PLANT-LIKE) Diatoms- Found in salt and freshwater environment. Large percentage of phytoplankton. Dinoflagellates- Found in salt and fresh water. Have two whip-like strands called flagella. Flagella allows them to spin through the water. Euglenoids- They do not fit well in either protist group because some are consumers, some are producers, and some may be both!

7 HETEROTROPHIC PROTISTS (ANIMAL- LIKE) ALSO CALLED PROTOZOANS Ameobas- highly structured cells, eat bacteria and small protists, some are parasitic Zooflagellates- The One shown is a Giardia. They use flagella to move. Some are parasitic while others are mutualistic. Cilliates- The one shown is a Paramecium. They use cilia to move. They also use cilia for feeding.

8 HETEROTROPHIC PROTISTS (FUNGI- LIKE) Water Mold- Some are decomposers while others are parasites. Slime Mold- Giant cells that have many nuclei.
