Memory Verse John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

The Twelve Apostles 1. Simon-Peter 2. Andrew 3. James 4. John 5. Philip 6. Bartholomew 7. Thomas 8. Matthew, Levi 9. Simon the Zealot 10. James, the son of Alphaeus 11. Thaddaeus 12. Paul

His Name: In Greek his name is Philippos that means “fond or lover of horses”.

His Background: Philip was also from Bethsaida in Galilee, John 1:44; 12:21, but we have no information of his family.

Philip unhesitatingly complied with the Lord’s request to follow Him. John 1:41-43

His Personality: In John 1:45-47, his ready acceptance of Jesus, and statement to Nathanael, seems to imply much knowledge of the Word.

"Son of Joseph" may have indicated his familiarity with the family of Jesus via James and John, our Lord’s cousins. It also indicates the royal line of David as prophesied.

The 3 episodes of John's Gospel furnish a consistent character-sketch of Philip as a naïve, somewhat shy, and sober-minded man.

His direct accounting at the feeding of 5,000 demonstrated his pragmatism, possibly from being a businessman in the fishing industry.

His Role Among the Apostles: A somewhat prominent place heading the list of the second quartette of disciples. Mat 10:2-4; Mark 3:16-19; Luke 6:14; Acts 1:13

Four events in John. 1) Inviting Nathanael to “come and see” Jesus. Philip is usually mentioned with Nathanael. John 1:45-51

2) Jesus feeding the 5,000 tests Philip. John 6:5-7

3) Greeks desiring to meet Jesus asked Philip for an introduction. John 12:21-22

4) One of the four questioners at the Upper Room, opening the way for Jesus’ teaching about the unity of the Father and the Son. John 14:8-9

Philip epitomized "seeing is believing", as tested by our Lord at the feeding of 5,000:

a) To Nathanael, "come and see".

a) To Nathanael, "come and see". b) The Greeks who wanted to "see" Jesus.

a) To Nathanael, "come and see". b) The Greeks who wanted to "see" Jesus. c) The Upper Room, "show us the Father".

This shows his Jewish propensity of desiring visible proof, Mat 12:38; John 2:18; 1 Cor 1:22, even though he previously had believed.

His Legacy: His Biblical accounts are in the Gospel of John, wanting to include his two friends from youth, Philip and Nathanael (Bartholomew).

This Philip gets confused with the Deacon Philip, Acts 21:8, who was also a great evangelist to the Samaritans.

He was a great teacher in Asia in the area of Phrygia with Hierapolis along with Bartholomew. He possibly taught in Greece, Western Europe, and Parthia.

Philip’s Legacy

Extra Biblical: "Acts of Philip", with appendix "the Journeyings of Philip”: his preaching and miracles. Sent with his sister Mariamme and Bartholomew to preach in Greece, Phrygia, and Syria.

He worked in Athens, where he lived for two years and founded a Church, appointing a Pastor and Deacons, he then went to Parthia.

Scythia Parthia Philip’s Legacy

Gnostics also appealed to the apostolic authority of Philip, in the "Gospel of Philip" from the Nag Hammadi library.

Foxes Book of Martyrs: He labored diligently in Upper Asia, and suffered martyrdom at Hierapolis, in Phrygia. He was scourged, thrown into prison, and afterwards crucified, A.D. 54.

Phil 3:15, “…and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you.”
