Long and honourable tradition Local authorities and Environmental Health Was known as Public Health Medical Officer of Health In early 1700s smallpox major issue in Sussex Elected members made decisions to control the spread of disease and adulteration of food In 19 th and 20 th Century made decisions on house clearance and introduction of sewerage disposal FOOD SAFETY & LICENSING TEAM

Shared service of Rother and Wealden for Environmental Health; Food and Safety; Pollution and Licensing Public Health now part of East Sussex County Council Public Health England makes decisions on outbreaks Complaints about sewage,poor housing and adulterated food still investigated Notifiable diseases and accidents reported to Wealden DC FOOD SAFETY & LICENSING TEAM

Bonfires and public safety Sussex Police and Battle Bonfire 1996 Established a safety group to address the many issues… No licence required 20 000 people on public land or highways Safety concerns with fireworks, crowd movements and crushing, provision of first aid, road closures safety of young children. Values
