Warm Up!!! WWelcome back! I hope that everyone had a wonderful, relaxing break! FFor today’s warm up, please answer the following questions in complete sentences: Who did Emperor Diocletian blame for the problems of Rome? Why? How did Emperor Constantine support Christianity? In Western Europe, what did most Europeans have in common?

Contributions of Ancient Rome Introduction As the Romans traded throughout their empire, people spread cultural and technological achievements. The Romans will also spread ideas to conquered peoples. Western civilization will be influenced by the cultural achievements of Rome. Evidence of Roman cultural achievements in the United States today (Washington D.C.)

Contributions of Ancient Rome Art & Architecture Pantheon – Rome’s most important temple was dedicated to the planetary Gods. ○U○Uses many elements of architecture such as columns, oculus, and dome.

Colosseum – Completed in 80 C.E. in Rome, the Colosseum was used in gladiatorial contests, and public spectacles such as executions and war reenactments (Entertainment). Forum – was the center ‘town square’ of the Kingdom, Republic, and Empire. ○M○Marketplace, business district, and civic center.

Technology Roman arches – mastered to balance weight in architecture. Aqueducts – structures that brought water into Rome and other cities of the empire. ○T○Tapped into a spring or a lake outside a city and through the use of gravity carried water into the city. Roads – 180,000 miles of road was constructed during the Roman Empire. ○F○Finished with paving stones on top of layers of small rocks, gravel, and sand. No cement needed!

Science Ptolemy – was a famous Roman geographer, astrologer, and mathematician. ○D○Develops the geocentric theory of the universe earth is the center of the universe and the planets revolve around the earth.

Medicine – The Romans wanted to help prevent the spread of disease and plague so they built numerous structures to improve hygiene. Public Baths – hot and cold pools of water accompanied with gardens, libraries and sometimes gyms. Public water systems – development of sophisticated sewage systems and aqueducts. Medical schools

Language Latin was the language of learning in Rome. ○O○Official Language of the Roman Catholic Church until the 20 th century. Latin was adopted by different people and developed into the Romantic Languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian). Latin heavily influences English

Did YOU Know?!? Astronauts cannot burp in space. It takes 100 pounds of rain water to produce a single pound of food from the earth. Hindu men believe(d) it to be unlucky to marry a third time. Religion Roman Mythology Christianity – Rome adopted Christianity as the Empire’s official religion. ○S○Spreads throughout Europe and today is the world’s most popular religion.

Law – Twelve Tables Foundations of early Roman Law and the central laws of the Roman Republic. ○I○Included ideas such as “innocent until proven guilty”. ○I○Influences people such as John Locke and documents like the Declaration of Independence.
