Health – Related Exercise There are 5 components of health – related exercise: 1.Cardiovascular fitness 2.Muscular Strength 3.Muscular Endurance 4.Flexibility 5.Body Composition
4
1. Cardiovascular Fitness The ability to exercise the entire body for long periods of time Important in any long distance event i.e. running, swimming, cycling, and rowing. Helps in many team sports, as you are expected to perform over a long period of time.
5
2. Muscular Strength The amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance Important when a great force is required i.e. lifting heavy weights, gymnastics holding a position on the rings, or a rugby player pushing in a scrum.
6
3. Muscular Endurance The ability to use the voluntary muscles many times without getting tired Allows muscles to be used repeatedly without getting tired. Important for long – distance sports such as swimming, running and cycling.
7
4. Flexibility The range of movement possible at a joint Means that the performer can move easily and has a good range of movement in their joints e.g. swimmers need flexibility in their shoulders to get a good reach in their stroke. Yoga is a good activity to improve flexibility.
