During class today, we will be completing part A (and part b through the beginning of step 7) Effect of Temperature on Enzyme Activity p54 For your warm up, Read part A of the lab procedure. DO NOT WRITE THE PROCEDURE DOWN YET. Make a labeled diagram of each step of part A. Put the book away. Use your diagram to write out the steps of the procedure, Construct a materials list, and Create an empty table in which to record your data. Biology Warm Up (modified 9/16) Remember to substitute “potato,” everywhere the book says, “liver.”

2.4 Chemical Reaction and Enzymes 2H 2 + O 2 Reactants 2H 2 O Product
5
2.4 Chemical Reaction and Enzymes Chemical Reaction Can be slow: Iron oxidizing (rust) Can be fast: Hydrogen and Oxygen exploding
6
Energy Exothermic Energy is released 2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O + energy Endothermic Energy is absorbed 2H 2 O 2H 2 + O 2 Energy +
7
Activation Energy Energy required to get a reaction started 2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O + energy
8
Activation Energy Energy required to get a reaction started 2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O + energy Catalysts Speed a reaction by lowering activation energy Enzymes Proteins that serve as catalysts in biological systems
9
Enzyme Action Enzymes provide a site for reactants to be brought together Temperature and pH can affect the shape of enzymes and reduce their effectiveness Enzyme Animation
