Set Free He has come with the authority of God He has come to save his people Report what you have seen
3
Prophet = Visit Luke 7:16They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to visit his people.” 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

Prophet = Visit Micah 7:18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. 19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. 20 You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.

Prophet = Visit Jeremiah 33: 24 No one living in Zion will say, “I am ill”; and the sins of those who dwell there will be forgiven. 43: 25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. Seems to have come to anoint him, but her tears needed cleaning and she let down her hair, which was also scandalous. Her physical actions are clearly an emotional response.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is— that she is a sinner.” Simon had heard the rumors that Jesus was a prophet and he wanted to know. Now he believes he has found the answer – he is not. – A prophet would know who the woman was!

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. Jesus knew who she was & he knew who Simon was & he knew his thoughts. Luke is sure to use Simon’s own words to confirm who he was. This was and expression of grateful love because she has received God’s overflowing forgiveness! This is what happens when God’s love intercedes the human situation!

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” What does it look like to accept the gospel? How are we so able to be in the presence of Christ and remain completely disconnected from his reality? He is the one guilty of poor hospitality and worse – an inability to come to terms with his heart.

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” “True faith happens when someone looks at Jesus and discovers God’s forgiveness; and the sign of proof of this faith is love.” – N.T. Wright

The Myth of Perfection
13
Set Free Embracing Death Pain is currency We continue to release our humanity and others are quick to consume it Scars must be deeper The only thing at the bottom is death Chasing the Prize Participation prizes Our humanity is defined by competition with an invisible opponent The rules must be constantly reinvented The only thing at the top is another rung
14
What is the solution? 50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
