SCHOTT Lighting Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design QUESTION: LED Driven Glass Fibre Optic Lighting – for the sustainable age

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG Lighting Systems: o Fluorescent o Low Voltage Tungsten Halogen o Fibre Optic with conventional light source o Fibre Optic with LED Light Source o Direct LED What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design Glass Fibre Optic – the basics: The properties/advantages of FO include: Absence of infrared – protects objects from heat damage. Absence of ultraviolet – protects objects from premature degradation. High colour rendering – seeing the colours in the object as it really is: Colour appearance – warm or cool white Low energy use - especially LED light source Light source remote from objects – security and heat

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design LED Light Source for Fibre Optic: No re-lamping required Low power consumption Excellent colour rendering Highest protection of objects Choice of colour temperature Dimming Easy integration “Retrofit” - long lifetime & low cost of ownership - up to 40% energy saving than conventional light sources - high CRI < 90 - ultra low UV especially with a glass fibre harness - 3000K and 4400K - on board or 0-10V remote - compatible with any 30mm common end

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architec ture and Design Direct LED Luminaires: The properties/advantages of high quality museum bespoke Direct LED: Very low infrared – protects objects from heat damage. Very low ultraviolet – protects objects from premature degradation. High colour rendering – seeing the colours in the object as it really is: Colour appearance – warm or cool white Low power consumption– typically 7.5W per metre for linear lightbar

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design Indirect Fibre Optic The properties/advantages of high quality museum Indirect Fibre Optic: Absence of infrared – protects objects from heat damage.

John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design Direct LED Luminaires: Infrared – low but more than Indirect FO Ultraviolet – low but more than Indirect FO. Low power consumption– heat energy is in the showcase in vicinity of objects Security – need to open the showcase if any failure

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design When Fibre Optic and when Direct LED?

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design Summary: When combined with an LED Light Source this would provide the best possible fusion of FO and LED technology giving both performance and efficiencies. If the objects being lit are fragile, organic, priceless or otherwise ‘essential’ then indirect FO light is still the best solution. If the objects are not so sensitive then quality direct LED is a solution, again this solution offers performance and energy efficiency. Then it comes to the design criteria and costs. Depending on the size of the installation one of the solutions will probably be more economic. Adherence to quality design criteria is the critical element when choosing a supplier.

SCHOTT LightIng Forum © SCHOTT AG What is the best combination of lighting for the museum and heritage world? John Wheatley: SCHOTT Architecture and Design Summary: o So in considering FO or LED lighting for museum application there isn’t really a definitive answer just a wider choice than in the past. o Indirect FO with conventional light source o Indirect hybrid FO/LED lighting o Direct LED Lighting
